Shepherd Huts

I love shepherd huts, they are both elegant and rustic. I first stayed in one in the 80’s on a wet camping holiday in Devon.

We were just about washed out from our canvas ridge tent and spotted an old shepherd hut in the next field. We did a deal with the campsite owner that if we cleared it out we could stay in it. He thought we were a bit mad to suggest it. It had been used for years as a chicken coop, it’s last job before that was literally a shepherds hut to watch the flock at lambing. It took some cleaning but when done it became the best holiday ever.

With just our minimal camping kit, candle lit with a tiny wood stove in the corner to keep it it cosy. Rain? Bring it on! The luxury of today’s bespoke glamping models take it to a new level but the essential cosy shape and feel remains.

They make great guest rooms if you have a big enough garden or land and are a good ready made ready to go option for the glamping market.
